How to Choose your European Travel Guide Book
It should be pretty easy to choose your guide book, right? You just get the first one that looks like it has the most information about where you want to go. But making a bad choice means that you are stuck in the middle of your travels and wishing that you didn't have to lug a heavy book around with you all of the time. Buying the right book guarantees that you will have an enjoyable vacation.
Consider the following:
What kind of traveler are you? Are you interested in finding the best place to eat or do you need a map to get around?
What kind of weight you would like to carry? A full-colored picture traveling book is great but heavy.
Where are you going? There are some great guide books that may not have much about your destination city.
What information do you need? Are you booking your hostel/hotel ahead of time or will you need some ideas when you get there? How about the language; do you need help or will you get by with English? Are you interested in the history?
What do you want to do? There are great books that are specific for driving tours, walking tours, and adventure travel.
And once you have looked through a few it should be pretty clear which will suit your needs. Or, buy them all, hire a guide and leave the books at the hotel.

Drawback to this guide book... Interesting and factual content is missing. Also full-color pictures make the guide book quite heavy to carry around with you.
Check it out in the library to plan trip before hand.

Good Compromise
The content in this guide book is basic, but pretty good. The hotel and dining guide is helpful. Very thick, but not too heavy. This guide book covers a lot of Germany.
Drawback... A lack of photos makes Germany seem a bit uninteresting.
