
In 1704 the works were started on the new summer residence for Württemberg family, that was originally supposed to be only the hunting lodge of Duke Eberhard Ludwig,
but soon developed into much bigger palace complex. The Duke moved into the Palace in 1709 and, following the temporary fashion, established the town around his residence.
In 1718 Ludwigsburg for short period Ludwigsburg became the capital of Württemberg, which later has been moved to nearby Stuttgart.
Ludwigsburg remain the Residential Palace of Kings of Württemberg, who through 18th century expanded the original buildings and the park area making Ludwigsburg one of the most impressive and extensive Baroque palace complexes in Europe.
The next century keeps the Palace in the shadow of the new Württemberg residences built in Stuttgart.
After the Second World War, which fortunately didn’t bring the damages to the Palace, the buildings undergone the main renovation in the spirit of late 18th century Baroque and Rococo
outlook of the residence.
The whole complex consists of the three palaces spread in the area of the big park.
The guided tours cover the interiors of: Ludwigsburg Palace and Favorite Palace ( hunting palace) ,
while the visits to the Monrepos Palace, which still belongs to Württemberg family, is possible only on special arrangement.
The park features the ‘Blossoming Baroque’ exposition of live flowers, bushes and trees planted according to Baroque rules of landscape gardens.
Children will be interested in Maerchengarten, the area decorated with sculptures and figures from German fairy tales.

Since 1998 the Ludwigsburg Palace Theater features occasional performances, ad can be also visited as a part of a guided tour.
