Founded by King Ludwig I of Bavaria, to house his privately financed collection of works by contemporary artists, Neue Pinakothek
today is the leading European art collection with works from classicism to art nouveau period, ranging from 1780 to 1910.

It is a part of empowering art collection, which consists of three galleries in the buildings located close to each other :
Neue Pinakothek,
Alte Pinakothek ( housing collection of German late Gothic and Renaissance art ),
Pinakothek der Moderne ( museum of modern art ) .

The former building, destroyed during WWII has been replaced by the new one in 1981 according to design by architect Alexander Freiherr von Branca.

Neue Pinakothek hosts one of the largest collections outside the United Kingdom of English 19th century painters, including the works by Thomas Gainsborough , William Hogarth , John Constable and Joshua Reynolds.

Among international painters particular attention is drawn to :

Francisco de Goya (Portrait of the Marquesa de Caballero )
Jacques-Louis David (Portrait of Anne-Marie-Louise Thélusson)
Eugène Delacroix (The Death of Ophelia)
Théodore Géricault (Heroic Landscape with Fishermen )

Separate rooms exhibit the masterpieces by Édouard Manet, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Van Gogh.

The vast collection of German sculpture and painting include Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich,
Neo-Baroque Arnold Böcklin ( Play of the Waves ) and the Impressionists represented by Max Liebermann (Boys Bathing), Lovis Corinth (Eduard, Count von Keyserling) and Max Slevogt.
