
As the name suggests the city Munichen ( ‘at Monks’) features enormous number of church buildings.
Besides of Benedictine Abbey and the Arcbishopric Palace there are numerous churches with hundred years of history.
Below are the most important ones, located around the Main Market Square.
Peterskirche
The church of St.Peter from 13th century rebuilt at the turning of 17th-18th with 306 leading to the belfry nicknamed ‘Old Peter’ with enormous
view on the city.
Asamkirche
The small church built by Asam brothers has the fresco depicting the life of its Patron Saint Jan Nepomuk.
Frauenkirche – Cathedral Church of Our Lady
Late Gothic church with mausoleum of King Ludwig of Bavaria, 15th century stained-glass windows and numerous old paintings including
Madonna by Jan Polack ( 1510). The elevator in Southern tower allows to admire the view on the city without much effort.
Theatinerkirche
The Baroque church of Teatine order from 17th century with late Rococco facade is the burial place of members from Wittelsbah family.
Michaelskirche
The first Baroque church built outside Italy, inspiration of many further churches, especially for artists from Voralberg school, preserves 30 graves of members from Wittelsbah family, including King Ludwig II of Bavaria, famuos due to his castles.
Heiliggeistkirche
another church rebuilt during the Baroque era, the church of Holy Spirit features the main altar painting by Ulrich Loth ( 1664 ).
