The present castle, where King Ludwig II of Bavaria spent his childhood has been built during the reign of his father Maximilian of Bavaria , who in 1832 commissioned the renovation of medieval ruins of former castle Schwanstein. The new building followed the neo-Gothic style of Domenico Quaglio.

In 1704 the works were started on the new summer residence for Württemberg family, that was originally supposed to be only the hunting lodge of  Duke Eberhard Ludwig,
but soon developed into much bigger palace complex. The Duke moved into the Palace in 1709 and, following the temporary fashion, established the town around his residence.
